I've been a volunteer since April 2013. I was looking to do something that I could be proud of myself for, something that would help me as well as help other people. I decided that I'd get into touch with some local charity (慈善)shops and I now volunteer in a local Sue Ryder Charity shop. Although at the time I didn't mind where I volunteered, I am glad that it was a Sue Ryder
shop that called me because it is a charity very close to my heart for many reasons, one of which is that my Dad was cared for in a hospice (临终关怀医院)
Volunteering in the shop has certainly provided me with an understanding of what shop work is like and I was surprised to find how much I really enjoy doing it. At the beginning, one of my difficulties was using a till (放钱的抽展),so I had till training and I quickly picked it up. Now, I can work the till on my own.
Not only have I leant about how a charity shop works, I've also realized how important the public are in charity. They provide the objects they no longer use, and then the shops sell the objects and raise money to provide care for people in need. I always leave the charity shop after work with a very satisfying feeling, as I know how important the work of Sue Ryder is for people and I've done something good for someone somewhere.
