You can probably all ride a bike well. I’m an exception (例外).
I started riding a bike when I was 3 years old. It was a tiny toy bike with four wheels. I loved it very much and rode it every day.
When I was 5, my cousin gave me a pink bike. It was a true bicycle with just two wheels! At the time, my parents were too busy to teach me how to ride it. So I had to learn to ride by myself. I practiced hard on weekends and during vacations, although I still didn’t know how to make turns.
One summer vacation, I borrowed an old bike and rode it with my friends on a country road. We sang and practiced our riding skills. Suddenly, a small boy ran into the road. I was shocked and couldn’t control the bike at all. My bike ran into the boy
and he fell. He didn’t get very seriously hurt, but his grandma was too angry to accept my apology. My cousin appeared five minutes later and saved me from the mess. But the experience frightened me: I no longer dared to ride a bike.
Then, last year, free bikes were offered to children. My mother tried to teach me how to ride. But the traffic made me so nervous that I had to ride really slowly. But I’m not going to give up. One day, believe me, you’d see me riding a bike in a big street.
50. When did the writer begin to ride a bike?
A. Two years old. B. Three years old. C. Five years old. D. Seven years old.
51. Who taught the writer to ride a bike when he was five?
A. His father. B. His mother. C. His cousin. D. No one.
52. Why did the writer say ―I no longer dared to ride a bike‖?
A. Because his parents didn’t allow him to ride a bike.
B. Because he didn’t have bikes any longer.
C. Because he hit a small boy and was very frightened.
D. Because he was afraid of that small boy’s grandma.
C
Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any ―secrets‖ to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s ―back to school‖ speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投篮) during his career. But he once said, ―I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.‖
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
53. Why does Barack Obama mention JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?
A. To compare these two famous persons.
B. To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.
C. To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.
D. To prove that failure is the mother of success.
54. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. No one can be successful without working hard.
B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.
55. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.
B. One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is facing with.
C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D. One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.
D
I know what you’re thinking: pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re ―saying‖ calories (卡路里),still others just don’t like breakfast food . But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight . ―Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,‖ says Katherine Brooking, R.D., who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s ―SELF CHALLENGE‖. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loadedwith vegetables, and you stick to one small piece. Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal. So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating
up last night’s leftovers – it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, ―You can always eat it tomorrow.‖ I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it … you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects. 56. The word ―leftovers‖ in paragraph I probably means ______. A. food left after a meal B. things left undone C. meals made of vegetables D. pizza topped with fruit57. What can we infer from the text? A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry. B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast. C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal. D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.58. According to the last paragraph, it is important to _______. A. eat something for breakfast B. be careful about what you eat C. heat up food before eating it D. eat calorie-controlled food59. The text is written mainly for those _______. A. who go to work early B. who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late D. who eat before sleep

Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana, Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource on the earth.
Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface. But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface. You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out. How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.Something must be done to prevent water form being polluted.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
●Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升) each month.
●Leaky taps(漏水的龙头) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!
●You can easily cut your 10-minute showers in half—and you’ll be just as clean. ●When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
●Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re wasting water!

I know I was very quiet in your class, and you never said much to me. But you did something special that made a big difference in my life. You see, all through my first year in school, I hated to read. Books were just words that had very little to do with me, and I was bored by them. I’ll never forget the first day of Grade Six when you took out a thick book and began to read the story to our class. Your voice seemed to change with the people in the story, and you drew pictures in my mind as you read aloud. Since that day, I couldn’t wait until after lunch when you would read to the class. You read us all kinds of wonderful books.
During the summer after my year in your class, I missed hearing the stories you read. So one day I picked up a book and read it all on my own. I found out that I could make the words interesting, too. Now, I love to read! Thank you for opening the world of books for me.
Yours,
Linda
