1. Environment pollution has become the focus of attention all over the world. What should be our way out of the worsening situation? Text A has investigated the causes of recent climate change and proposed appropriate solutions — the building of food-providing ecosystems everywhere. Text B advocates powering down to achieve selfsufficiency, which is best embodied in country style living. Have you ever imagined living in a house you built yourself, growing your own food, raising some chickens, geese, and perhaps some other livestock, selling some of your produce for pocket cash, without the frustrating commutes in rush hour traffic or rent payments to make? To what extent is the above utopia a practical possibility?

The Ecological Crisis: A Moral Problem Today’s ecological crisis reveals problems in morality. First among these is the abuse of advances in science and technology. Many recent discoveries have brought undeniable benefits to human beings. Unfortunately, it is now clear that the application of these discoveries in the fields of industry and agriculture have produced harmful long-term effects. The gradual depletion of the ozone layer and the related “greenhouse effect” has now reached crisis level as a consequence of industrial growth, massive urban concentrations and vastly increased energy needs. Industrial waste, the burning of fossil fuels, unrestricted deforestation: all of these are known to harm the atmosphere and environment. The resulting climate changes will make low-lying lands being flooded in the future.
