Moral life rests upon the individual’s ability to imagine and to feel the inner states of others; and George Eliot strove not only to show this ability developing in her characters but also to instill it in her readers… She sought to enlarge our vision and sympathy by vividly and sympathetically presenting the interior states of her characters. In life we are isolated from our fellows, with only a very indirect access to their consciousness. In reading novels in which the psychology of the characters is realistically portrayed we have a direct experience of the inner states of others and an immediate intuition of our common humanity…As a result of this e
xperience, we become far more able to suspend our disbelief in the selfhood of our fellows, and our moral faculties of vision and sympathy are strengthened.

The opening of Charles Dickens s Bleak House goes beyond that and places these facts in a human context, and thus conveys a certain attitude towards London and the people living in it.
