Thisstandardisissuedunderthe xeddesignationD1141;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.ThisstandardhasbeenapprovedforusebyagenciesoftheDepartmentofDefense.
1.Scope
1.1Thispracticecoversthepreparationofsolutionscon-taininginorganicsaltsinproportionsandconcentrationsrep-resentativeofoceanwater.2
NOTE1—Sincetheconcentrationsofoceanwatervarieswithsamplinglocation,thegrossconcentrationemployedhereinisanaverageofmanyreliableindividualanalyses.Traceelements,occurringnaturallyincon-centrationsbelow0.005mg/L,arenotincluded.

4.1Thissubstituteoceanwatermaybeusedforlaboratorytestingwhereareproduciblesolutionsimulatingseawaterisrequired.Examplesarefortestsonoilcontamination,deter-gencyevaluation,andcorrosiontesting.
NOTE2—Thelackoforganicmatter,suspendedmatter,andmarinelifeinthissolutiondoesnotpermitunquali edacceptanceoftestresultsasrepresentingperformanceinactualoceanwater.Wherecorrosionisinvolved,theresultsobtainedfromlaboratorytestsmaynotapproximatethosesecuredundernaturaltestingconditionsthatdiffergreatlyfromthoseofthelaboratory,andespeciallywhereeffectsofvelocity,saltatmospheres,ororganicconstituentsareinvolved.Alsotherapiddepletionofreactingelementspresentinlowconcentrationssuggestscautionindirectapplicationofresults.
1.2Thispracticeprovidesthreestocksolutions,eachrela-tivelyconcentratedbutstableinstorage.Forpreparationofsubstituteoceanwater,aliquotsofthe rsttwostocksolutionswithaddedsaltarecombinedinlargervolume.Anaddedre nementinadjustmentofheavymetalconcentrationisprovidedbytheadditionofasmallaliquotofthethirdstocksolutiontotheprevioussolution.
