Conclusion
TheincreasinglyimportantroleofCVCsindeliveringlong-termhemodialysishasledtothedevelopmentofmanygen-erationsofdialysiscatheters.Thesedevicescarryrisksofmanyseriouscomplications,buttheyarealsoanecessarytoolformanagingrenalfailurepatients.Whetherchoosingatemporaryacutecatheterorachronictunneledcuffedcath-eter,thephysicianhasmanychoicesindesign.Thedecisionofwhichcathetertoplaceismadebytheinsertingphysicianandcanincludefactorssuchaseaseofinsertion,userprefer-ence,relationshiptovendor,andcostofcatheter.However,themostimportantfeaturetoconsideristhelong-termfunc-tionofthecatheterandcomplicationrates.Everysmallim-provementinthecomplicationorre-interventionratewillhaveaprofoundimpactonindividualpatientcareandcosttosocietyofdialysiscathetermanagement.
Nonetheless,theanswertocathetercoatingandtipdesignisnotde nitive,andfuturerandomizedcontrolledhumanclinicaltrialsarenecessarytosubstantiatetheclinicalbene- ts,ifany,ofnewcatheterdesignsandcoatings.
