三.阅读理解(共18小题,每小题2分, 满分36分)

A

In many cultures white is often connected with something

positive. A white-collar job, for instance, is the kind of job many

people look for, working with your brain and not your hands.

White has a clean and pure image(形象). That is why doctors, dentists, and nurses

usually wear white uniforms. Babies are dressed in white at baptisms(洗礼)and brides wear white wedding dresses at weddings. White in these cases is the symbol of innocence or purity.

Sometimes white is used in expressions that are not good. ―Whitewash‖ is one such

expression. At first, ―whitewash‖ meant to paint over something with white paint to make it look better. However, it means something different today: to hide or to cover up mistakes or failures.

A ―white elephant‖ is another example of white used in a negative way. In ancient

Thailand, a white elephant was regarded as a holy animal, but it was very expensive to keep. The kings of those days gave a white elephant to the people they wanted to defeat. Today, a ―white elephant‖ means something that is big, useless, and unwanted. In America, when people want to get rid of their furniture or clothes, they often have a ―white elephant sale‖.

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老)treated the poor message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the runner brought the pharaoh unhappy news, he was killed.

Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for a picnic. As we walked happily out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, ‖Oh boys, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.‖ I wanted to hit him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.

Several months ago I was running to catch a bus. As I arrived at the station breathlessly, the sales agent( 经纪人)said with a big smile, ―Oh that bus left five minutes ago.‖ It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic(无同情心的) attitude with which the news is delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and we should do it with the proper attitude. For example, a doctor advising a patient that he needs an operation should do it in a caring way. When delivering any bad news, we should share the feeling of the receiver.

Unfortunately, many people don’t realize this. And sometimes their unsympathetic

attitudes really make you want to quarrel with them.

40. In Paragraph 1, the writer tells the story of the pharaoh to_______.

43. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Delivering bad news properly is important in communication.

B. Helping others sincerely is the key to business success.

C. Receiving bad news requires great courage.

D. Learning ancient traditions can be useful.

D

Zoo elephants don’t live as long as those in the wild, according to a study which is sure to cause an argument about keeping the big animals on display. Researchers compared the life spans (寿命) of elephants in European zoos with those living in Amboseli National Park in Kenya and others working in a timber (木材) factory in Burma. Animals in the wild or in natural working conditions had life spans twice that or more of their relatives in zoos.

In recent years animal care activists(积极分子) have called on people to stop keeping elephants in zoos, largely because of the lack of space and small numbers of animals that can be kept in a group.

The researchers found that the life span for African elephants in European zoos was 16.9 years, compared with 56 years for elephants who died of natural causes in Kenya’s Amboseli Park. Adding in those elephants killed by people in Africa lowered the median life span there to 35.9 years. For the more endangered Asian elephants, the median life span in European zoos was 18.9 years, compared with 41.7 years for those working in the Burma timber factory. Median means half died younger than that age and half lived longer.

There is some good news, though. The life spans of zoo elephants have improved in recent years, suggesting an improvement in their care and raising, but ―Protecting elephants in Africa and Asia is far more successful than protecting them in Western zoos.‖

There are about 1,200 elephants in zoos, half in Europe, researchers paid more attention to female elephants, which make up 80 percent of the zoo population. One amazing thing was that Asian elephants born in zoos had shorter life spans than those brought to the zoos from the wild.

Zoos usually can’t provide enough space for elephants, and zoo animals often are alone or with one or two other unrelated animals, while in the wild they usually live in related groups of 8 to 12 animals. In Asian elephants, baby death rates are two to three times higher in zoos than in the Burmese timber factory, and then, in adulthood, zoo-born animals die young. People are not sure why.

44. What is argued in this passage?

A. Elephants in the wild don’t live as long as those in the zoos.

B. Elephants should not be kept on display.

C. Asian elephants are in danger.

D. Asia is far more successful in protecting elephants in zoos.

45. What does the underlined word ―median‖ mean according to the passage?

A. Average. B. Longest. C. Shortest. D. Ordinary.

46. Which of the following is NOT the disadvantage of keeping elephants in zoos?

A. Limited number of relatives. B. Not enough space.

C. Shorter life span. D. Less attention.

47. We can learn from the passage that_________________.

A. People have already found out why zoo-born animals die young .

B. There are more male elephants than female ones in zoos.

C. The life spans of zoo elephants are becoming shorter and shorter nowadays.

D. Animals care activists are against keeping elephants in zoos

48. Whom does the writer of the passage expect to pay more attention to the topic

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the

most loved children’s books of all time, and many

adults enjoy it as well. It tells the story of a young girl

named Alice, who follows a rabbit entering a magical

world called Wonderland. She has many experiences

which seem to change the rules of reasoning or

common sense. The popularity of the book comes from

its imagination, interesting story, and art work.

The writer of the book is Lewis Carroll. In

fact,

Lewis Carroll was not the writer’s real name. His real name was Charles Dodgson. One day, he took a boat ride down the Thames River to have a picnic with three little girls who were friends of the family. To keep them entertained on the ride, he told them a story in which Alice, the middle child, was the main character (角色). They enjoyed the story very much.

Charles later wrote the story down under the name Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and gave it to Alice as a Christmas present. Later, he gave a copy to his friend George MacDonald. George read it to his children and they loved it. George suggested to Charles that he make a book from his story. Charles then wrote more parts to the story until it was around 35,000 words. It was first printed in 1866, with art work by John Tenniel, under the name Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book was an immediate success.

One of its first fans was Queen Victoria. She immediately requested a collection of all of Lewis Carroll’s works. She was surprised to find that they included many works on math. In fact, Charles Dodgson was a highly respected mathematician. This can be seen in many puzzles and plays on reasoning that appear in his books and poems.

Since the story was first printed, it has kept selling up to the present day. It has been translated into over fifty languages and has had several movies based on it. The story is even mentioned in the popular 1999 film The Matrix by the character Morpheus.

36. The passage is mainly about ______.

B. a girl’s adventurous experiences

C. the importance of one children’s book

D. the birth of a book and its lasting influences

37. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer published his works under his real name.

B. The character Alice came from George’s child.

C. John helped partly to make the book popular.

D. Charles offered a copy to George for advice.

38. We can learn from the passage that ______.

A. Queen Victoria asked for a few of Charles’ writings

B. Charles was good at reasoning and writing

C. Charles had all his works translated into fifty languages

D. The Matrix was based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

39. Which of the following is the right order of the passage?

a. Charles gave his story to Alice as a Christmas present.

b. Charles had a picnic with three little girls on the Thames.

c. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first printed in 1866.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, ―You’re nervous and that’s okay. Everyone is afraid of high school.‖ I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.

On the first day I was late for every class and was often lost. The school seemed like a puzzle(迷宫). Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn’t think I could rise to this challenge(挑战), especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.

However, after the first week I finally had my schedule(课程安排Except for falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.

Since then, I’ve been elected vice(副) president of my class, which wasn’t much of a success since only three people ran for the four positions.

It is normal to be afraid of a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you join in some out-of-class activities because you’ll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn’t straight A’s.

Most important of all, be who you are, whether you’re a ―fool‖, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don’t try to pretend to be someone you’re not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

42. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The author was afraid on his first day just because his classmates were

unfriendly.

B. After a week, the author found high school not so challenging as he had

imagined.

C. The author ran for president of his class against three other students.

D. The author was not familiar with the new surroundings in the beginning.
