ItiswellknownthattheMgZnphaseisthemainstrengtheningphaseinZK60alloy.AccordingtothereportsofGaliyevandZhang[8,9],MgZn2andZn2Zr3phasemayalsobecontainedinthematrix.However,asillustratedabove,additionofREleadstotheformationofMgÁZnÁREintermetallics.Asaresult,thesolidsolubilityofZninmagnesiumisreduced.Furthermore,coarsenet-likeRE-containingintermetallicsmaketheas-castMgÁZnÁZrÁREalloyfragile[7].Therefore,cerium-richMMhadlittleeffectsontheambienttemperaturetensilepropertiesofmagnesiumalloysintheas-castcondition.However,additionofREindeeddevelopedthemicrostructureandimprovedthetensilestrength,especiallytheyieldstrengthoftheextrudedZK60ÁREalloys.TheexcellentmechanicalpropertiesofextrudedZK60ÁREalloysmaybeduetosomefactorsbelow.First,hotextrusionpromotedtheforma-tionofamicrostructureinwhichtheRE-containingintermetallicswasbrokenanddistributedparalleltotheextrusionaxis,responsibleforasubstantialstrengthen-ing.Anotherfactormaycontributetothedevelopedfinemicrostructure.Accordingtothewell-knownHallÁPetchrelation,theyieldstressdependsonthegrainsizeasfollows[10].DsGS0Kd(1=2

Therefore,anincreaseofyieldstrengthduetograinrefinementmaybeanotherfactorwhichinfluencetheyieldstressofZK60ÁREalloys.Asaresult,theyieldstrengthincreasedwithREcontentforthealloysstudied.TheinfluenceofextrusiontemperatureonyieldstresscanalsobeaccountedbyEq.(1).ThegrainsizeofrecrystallizedZK60ÁREalloysincreasewithextrusiontemperature.Therefore,theyieldstressdecreasedwithincreasingextrusiontemperature.However,theelonga-tionofZK60ÁREalloysdecreasedinspiteoftherefinedmicrostructureduetoREadditions.ThismaybecontributedtothelargeamountoffragileRE-contain-ingintermetallicsinthematrix.
