Enough rain to build moisture reserves in the soil A mild, warm spring with gentle rain to encourage the vine’s growth A warm settled, frost-free period during the vine’s flowering, followed by a hot sunny summer with a little rain to swell the developing fruit A long, fine, dry autumn to discourage disease and complete the ripening of the grape. Grape should also be
picked in mild, dry conditions to avoid dilution and keep grapes fresh.
Weather 天气
As weather conditions vary from year to the next, the weather of each particular year
affects the style and quality of wines from that year. This is especially important in those
areas with unreliable climates where weather conditions can drastically affect the vine,
the size of the crop and the final quality of the wine.
A wine from Bordeaux made in a year that suffered a poor summer with too much rain
and a lack of sun would be thin and acidic due to the under-ripe grapes. By contrast a
wine from the same region made from fully ripe grapes grown in a year with a hot
summer would have pronounced fruit character and silky smooth tannins.
Soils 土壤
The grape vine often thrives where other plants fail.
In General...
Poor soil = low yields of fine quality wine
Rich soil = higher yields of less good quality wine
Vines planted in poor soils are forced to grow a deep and extensive root system to extract moisture and nutrients from the subsoil, this makes the vine less susceptible to drought while minerals enrich the juice of grape and intensify the flavour of the wine.
Throughout the wine producing latitudes, there are many different soil types.
Water can come from rain, from the ground, or from irrigation. Too much water can cause grapes to become bloated. This may result in bigger crops, but the flavours and sugars will be diluted, and the wine will have less alcohol, body
and flavour. In areas where rainfall is high, such as much of Europe, the best vineyards are on slopes or soils, such as
