Read the following passage. (每题1分,共5分)
Teenagers’ Problems
We do not want to be cantankerous. But we strongly believed that, for reasons to be documented in the succeeding chapters, American civilization tends to stand in such awe of its teenage society, with permanently teenage standards of thought, culture and goals. As a result, American society is growing down rather than growing up.
This is a creeping disease, not unlike hardening of the arteries. It is a softening of adulthood. It leads to immature goals in music, art and literature. It forces newspapers, television producers, and movie makers to translate the adult English usage into the limited vocabulary of the teenage culture. It opens up vast opportunities for commercial exploitation and thereby sets off a chain reaction which constantly strengthens teenage tyranny.
It is tyranny that dominates most brutally the teenagers themselves. What starts with relatively innocent conforming to the ways of the crowd soon turns into manipulation to those crowd mores by a combination of inept adult leadership and plain commercial exploitation. The longer it continues, the harder it becomes for dissenters to declare their independence.
We are fully aware that not all teenagers and their parents have fallen victim to teenage tyranny. Many have retained their freedom and upheld their standards. But even those who have resisted the trend know that the stronger the tide the harder it becomes to move against it. We hope that our efforts will make it a little easier for them.
We are not concerned with juvenile delinquency, except when it becomes part of the “general” behavior of a substantial number of teenagers. The reason we will not deal with delinquency here is that we strongly feel this to be a different and special problem. It should be treated as such, and experts far better equipped to diagnose and combat it.
1 What is the authors’ attitude toward teenage cultural standards as opposed to those of adults?
A Teenage standards are, in all things, gross and uncultivated.
B Teenage standards are to be ignored because they are not based on sufficient
experience.
C Teenage standards are simply immature in comparison to those of old adults. D When one grows to maturity, one’s standards are automatically become
superior to those of teenagers.
2 The effects of teenage tyranny on society are initially evinced A suddenly and catastrophically B in an insidious, unobstrusive way. C as a result of teenage demands D in such a way as to be truly ineffective.
3 The reason for the authors’ concern in this matter is that A today’s children are tomorrow’s citizen B the voting age has been decreased to eighteen. C American civilization itself seems to be threatened. D We are becoming the laughing stock of the world. 4 Those more harshly affected by this tyranny are A the teenagers themselves B senior citizens C the newer generations of teenagers D the parents of the teenagers
5 It is clear that the authors will not become involved in a discussion of teenage crime because
A they have made only a slight study of the subject B they are more interested in other social problems
C they feel that teenage crime should be treated as a part of the problem of crime in general.
D their thought is that teenage crime is a special and particular problem and should be treated as such.
