confuse、puzzle、perplex、 bewilder用法辨析 confuse “混淆”、“被搞糊涂”,指在思想上、内容上被搞糊涂、搞迷糊。名词为 confusion. 动词短语 mix up 也含 confuse 的意思。

1) The police arrested the wrong man mainly because they confused the names

they had been given by the witness.

警察逮错了人,主要原因是他们混淆了证人提供给他们的名字。

2) Words with similar meaning and similar forms are liable to be confused.

意义相似的字和形式相似的字容易混淆。

3)Don' t confuse Austria with Australia. 不要把Austria(奥地利)跟Australia(澳大利亚)弄混淆了。

4)The closeness of the twin brother often confuse their friends.

这对双胞胎兄弟极相似,使他们的朋友们常分不清谁是谁。

5)They asked so many questions that I got confused.

他们问了我很多问题,把我都给弄糊涂了。

6)He made a complete confusion between the meaning of “pleasure” and

“happiness”.

他把“pleasure”与“happiness”这两个词的意思完全混淆了。

7)This originates in confusion between the two domains of law and morality.

9)We were completely mixed up/confused by the teachers’ different

explanations to the same problem.

puzzle “困惑”“不解”,普通用词,泛指对某事物或现象感到困惑,对问题苦思不得 其解。

1) The doctor puzzled about the woman’s disease, for which he could not find

cause.

医生对这妇女的病感到困惑,他找不到原因。

2) With a school record like yours I’m puzzled why you didn’t try for a

university scholarship?

你学习成绩这么好,我吧明白你为什么不申请大学奖学金。

3)I have in mind some doubts which really puzzle me.

我心中有一些疑团, 百思不得其解。

4)The murder case remians a mystery, which continues to puzzle the police.

那桩谋杀案仍然是个谜, 仍然使警察们感到困扰。

perplex “困惑”、“迷惑”、“费解”, 侧重指某事物或现象复杂难以理解,因不知

道如何处置而感到困惑,焦虑不安。

1) The strange phenomenon has fascinated and perplexed scientists from more

than half a century.

这个奇怪的现象半个多世纪来一直使科学家们感到好奇和困惑。

2)When new math was introduced into schools, many parents were perplexed by it.

学校开设新的数学课时,许多家长对此感到迷惑。

3)This problem is hard enough to perplex even the teacher.

这个问题确实很难,连老师都迷惑不解。

4)Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man.

即便是知识最渊博的人也会被这样的问题难住。

bewilder “困惑”、“迷惑”, 侧重于“迷茫”、“被难住”的意思。指事物或现象使

人的大脑陷入迷糊状态,不能清醒进行思考和理解,表现为心理和智力的紊乱,语气较强。

1)I am totally bewildered by the clues to this crossword puzzle.

这个纵横字谜的提示完全把我弄糊涂了。

2) The motorist was bewildered by the conflicting road signs and had to ask

for information from a policeman.

摩托车手被自相矛盾的马标搞糊涂了,只好向一个警察问询。

3) He gave no reply to my answer but rather looked at me with an expression

which bewildered me very much.

他对我的回答没有吭声,而是用一种让我感到迷惑的表情看着我。

4)He was fired without warning and is completely bewildered about the

reason.

他没有得到事先警告就被开除了,完全不明白是什么原因。

baffle 本意是阻止,阻绕的意思,也可用于表示 “使困惑”、“使人为难”、“使迷

惑”的意思。

1)The odd noise in the empty room baffled him.

空房中的怪声使他困惑惊讶。

2)He altered his attitude on the problem all ofsudden, which baffle me very

much.

他突然改变了在这个问题上的态度,这让我感到十分不解。

3)On the whole, I did a good job in the examination, but there was one

question baffled me comepletely.

总的来说,考试我做得不差,但还是有一道考题完全把我难倒了。
