On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke, dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone.

At six o'clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarettes smoke in her house? How? How? Had someone got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry.

Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door-"a master key ―perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn't go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait.

It was just after four o'clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter-box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.

The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related

to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon (结肠). Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is into a new discovery. In 1945, about 69 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin(青霉素)to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

32. What is the best possible title of the passage?

A. Drug and Food

B. Cancer and Health

C. Food and Health

D. Health and Drug

33. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Drugs are always given to animals for medical reasons

C. Researchers have known about the potential dangers of food additives for over sixty-five

years.

D. Food may cause forty percent of cancer in world.

34. How has science done something harmful to mankind?

A. Because of science, diseases caused by polluted food haven been eliminated(消除).

B. It has caused a lack of information concerning the value of food.

C. Because of the application of science, some potentially harmful materials have been added

to food.

D. The scientists have preserved the color of meats, but not of vegetables.

35. The underlined word ‗carcinogenic‘most nearly means ‗_____‘.

A. trouble-making C. money-making

B. color-retaining D. cancer-causing

Ideas for Better Sleep

Most teens need about 8.5 to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. But about 1 in 4 teens has trouble sleeping. Lack of sleep can affect everything from our emotions to how well we focus on tasks like driving. 36 Here are some ideas:

第5 页(共11页)高三英语

2015届高三一模试题

Be active during the day. You‘ve probably noticed how much running around little kids do and how soundly they sleep. Take a tip from a child and get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. 37 Just don‘t work out too close to bedtime because exercise can wake you up before it slows you down.

Keep a sleep routine. 38 Creating a set bedtime routine can improve this relaxation effect. So relax every night by reading, listening to music, spending time with a pet, writing in a journal, playing Sudoku, or doing anything else that relaxes you.

39 Lots of people think that alcohol or drugs will make them relaxed and sleepy, but that‘s not the case. Drugs and alcohol increase a person‘s chance of waking up in the middle of the night.

Say goodnight to electronics. 40 If you can‘t make your bedroom a tech-free zone, at least shut everything down an hour or more before lights-out.

Everyone has a sleepless night once in a while. But if you regularly have trouble sleeping and you think it‘s affecting your mood or performance, talk to your doctor.

A.Avoid alcohol and drugs.

B.How can we get the sleep we need?

C.So it‘s important to have enough sleep.

D.Electronics can help us get more relaxed.

E.Experts recommend using the bedroom for sleep only.

F.Physical activity can decrease stress and help people feel more relaxed.

G.Going to bed at the same time every night helps the body expect sleep.
