2.3.2 Ubiquitous Omission of Words

Omission is also an important feature of English headlines. In the process of translation we may make proper omission of some individual words in accordance with the corresponding laws inherent in the two languages concerned in order to retain and better express the original meaning. All functions that seem to have no practical meaning are inclined to be omitted (with the precondition of arousing no different meanings). The purpose is clear---brief, eye-catching, space-saving. There are several ways to omit:

(3) Omission of link words

In English headlines, the link word such as “and” is always replaced by “,”: Bush Pressures Iran , Back Israeli Self-Defense 布什向伊朗施压同时支持以色列的防卫措施 (4) Omission of Personal Pronouns

China Appoint First Governer in WHO 中国任命本国首位世界卫生组织官员 （= China Appoint its First Governer in WHO ）

(5) Omission of Copulative Verbs

Seven Injured in N.J. Chemical Blast 有七人在新泽西洲化学品爆炸中受伤 （= Seven are Injured in NJ Chemical Blast）
