Abstract

In international news, English translation of the news takes a considerable proportion. While choosing whether or not to read the article in the English news, readers regard highly of the quality of translation of headlines. News headlines were often regarded as the "soul" of news reports. In order to understand and make an accurate translation, we are required to master the features and translation techniques well. Generally speaking, the news headline is usually succinct and shows a new, lively and eye-catching feature. So many people find it difficult to understand and translate. English news headlines have their own special laws which are different from the tutorial textbooks in both style and characteristics. But if we understand and master the features of the headlines, understanding and translation problem is not hard to solve. The preliminary discussion on translation will help readers better understand the English press. At the same time, the topic is also a fairly good training and learning for the students of English majors.

This paper is composed of three chapters: the first chapter discusses the basic definition and theory of English-Chinese translation; chapter two summarizes features of English news headlines ,including features of language, grammar, vocabulary and rhetoric devices, and also collects lots of examples to help understand it directly; chapter three mainly deals with translation techniques including literal translation, taking advantage of characteristic of Chinese, adding new words while translating, leaving some words out, changing sentence structures, tactful punctuations ,translation of the figure of speech and classical expressions and idioms.
