But what kind of translation is literal translation? And what kind of translation is free translation?For example:

Free translation: 不要贼走关门.

2） Smashing a mirror is no way to make an ugly person beautiful, nor it is a way to make social problem evaporate.

Literal translation: 砸镜子不能使丑八怪变漂亮,也不能使社会问题烟消云散.

Free translation: 砸镜子并不能解决实际问题.

Form the example 1), free translation is better than literal translation. From the example 2), literal translation is better than free translation. But how to use literal translation and free translation? There is a sentence:"Translate literally,if possible, or appeal to free translation."

On the frame of literal translation and free translation, there are some other detailed translation techniques: adding new words, leaving some words out, changingsentence structures, using otherfigure of speech, using classical expressions and idioms.

3.1 Adding New Words

In Chinese headlines, the name, identity and nationality of the main characters in the event are always can be seen. Some information should be added to the Chinese version in order to make it more idiomatic. For example,

Mauritius –Life’s a Beach. 毛里求斯------生活是阳光沙滩

(Adding a new word “阳光” according to the news will help readers understand the news better)
