whichgivenaclassicalstringxwillgeneratea(classical)descriptionforaquantumcircuit.Thequantumcomputercanthenproduceananswerbasedontheresultofmeasurementsoftheoutputwiresofthequantumcircuit.Withoutlossofgenerality,wecanassumethatthecircuitistobeevaluatedwiththegroundstate(theallzerocomputationalbasevector)asitsinitialstate.Thealgorithmissaidtobee cientifthecorrespondingTMrunsintimepolynomialonthesizeoftheinputx,whichinturnsimpliesthatcircuitsizeisalsopolynomial.

Fromapurelyabstractpointofview,itcanbeinferredthattheonlyrequirementsofthismodelisthatthestatespacehasalinearstructureandapropernorm-inducinginnerproduct,sothatthemeasurementruleisalwayssound.Traditionally,quantumcomputinghasbeendescribedintermsofcomplexHilbertspaces,butinprinciple,aswejustdiscussed,asoundmodelofcomputationcanbede nedonanyotherHilbertspace.Inparticular,inthispaperwestudymodelsofrealcomputingandquaternioniccomputing,basedonthe2n-dimensionalvectorspacesontherealsandthequaternions,respectively.
